Torpedo

The size

Torpedo is a loose term. Most makers use it for a pyramid with a sharp point: an open foot and a head that tapers to a point. An older definition adds a closed foot and a bulge in the middle.

Most run about 6 to 7 inches, narrowing from a 52 to 54 ring at the foot to about 40 at the head. The Montecristo No. 2, at 6 x 52, gets called both a torpedo and a pirámide.

Why smoke one

The pointed head concentrates the smoke and helps the flavors come together. How deep you cut the head changes the draw and the intensity of the smoke.

The body is wide, so filler and binder drive most of the flavor.
